I keep seeing this misuse pop-up in portfolio books and sites, and it's tragic. So, let's clear the usage up now, shall we? If you are showing off a set of materials, traditionally consisting of a letterhead, business card and envelope, using a logotype or identity - you should refer to this suite as stationery not stationary, which means static, not moving. Got it?

I use 'e' for envelopes and 'a' for attention (as in standing at)just in case you need an aide memoire

an easy way to remember this is that you buy stationery from a stationer (not a stationar) - my mum taught me that :)

I use another 'passed down by your mother' method.
Use the words Pen and Car.
A pen is always stationery and the middle letter is e.
The car can be stationary and that middle letter is a.

That pearl of wisdom stuck, now if only there was an easier way to remember the whole shoe lace thing.

I have the same bug bear. I hate that misspelling.

Got it. Now if only I could get the 'effect' and 'affect' down ...

Definetelly satationery!
